The postman never visits, phones may not work – but broadband is now beamed by satellite thanks to an innovative project by the Scottish Government.
The remote beach cottages at Morroch Bay , deep in Scotland 's South West are only accessible down the side of a cliff by Four Wheel Drive or on foot. The two beach cottages are rented as holiday homes all year round – particularly to Land Rover owners.
Around 2000 homes and businesses in Scotland are now getting satellite and wireless broadband following a £3.5 million investment by the Scottish Broadband Reach Programme to connect remote broadband black-spots. Richard Nash, who manages Morroch Bay beach cottages, explained that this new service may also benefit researchers, writers and academics looking for extended out-of-season isolation. “ You are right on the shoreline, seemingly miles from anywhere, with ocean as far as your eyes can stretch – you can even see the curvature of the earth. However you can now also keep in touch with the rest of the world with 21st Century technology. ”
Morroch Bay beach cottages are in a unique remote location. Whilst this hidden hideaway may be hard to find, it's also impossible to forget and is extensively booked by returning visitors.
This development has been made possible by the interest of the off road community and the power of technology. Further details: www.morroch-bay.com

Many thanks to Robin Dyer. An excellent paper of field-trip notes written and complied by Robin Dyer for an annual field trip organised for his non-geological friends and family.
